A successful singer-songwriter and a pioneer in the fight for Mental Health reform in Colorado, Maree McRae impacted the life of many. Her poignant songs, healing performances, and unrelenting resolve to promote awareness about the mental health crisis resulted in a life that embodied her mission: “To use my music to speak” becoming a music ambassador for mental health.
Her spirit lives on in the people she touched through her music, and in the residents she supported through her non-profit, Heart Mind Haven. This is Maree’s legacy, and it was what she was most proud of.

Enduring heartbreak, but never dimming hope, Maree McRae was brought full circle combining her passionate music and story to make a difference in areas of need that make the world a more compassionate place.
Her primary focus had always been to support and strengthen the members of society that are typically forgotten and shunned. While witnessing first-hand the mental health struggles her daughter, Stella Ruelle, went through, and the lack of support in the health system at the time, she ultimately ended up founding Heart Mind Haven - a non-profit dedicated to fill the critical need for safe, affirmative supportive recovery housing for the LGBTQIA+ community in Colorado.
Maree believed we are all connected and we are all great teachers to each other. She found through her songs and videos how to advocate and share messages on subjects that mean the most to her heart and it is evident in her music and performance. Maree’s moving songs, REASON and OVER AND OVER were written in the wake of her daughter’s struggles.
Maree toured throughout Sweden and the US before settling in Colorado. She performed throughout the Front Range region and was always a rare talent to see live. Past venues include the Obama Inauguration, Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre, Denver Botanical Gardens and the nationally renowned resort The Broadmoor, World Musicfest. Maree maintained a 5 star review by vendors with the national booking company Gigmasters/The Bash and had been awarded Best Artist/Performer of 2015 through 2021.

Shortly before her death, Maree was interviewed on the Death Demystified Podcast by Dr Angela Deerheart of The Heart Way. In this candid conversation Maree talks about her music, her illness, her experience witnessing her beloved daughter’s struggles with mental health, and her decision to leave this earth on her own terms - by qualifying and using Medical Aid in Dying (MAID).

LIGHTS
LIGHTS is a serene collection of original compositions and tasteful arrangements of well chosen traditional carols. The project illuminates tranquility with McRae’s expressive piano and guitar playing and Hickman’s soulful melodies on the wooden and silver flutes weaving in and out to achieve a beautiful balance of instrumental harmonies. These two artists are from different musical worlds but close in internal worlds as sisters. After their Hawaii tour together and blending their musical endeavors, they were asked to do a Christmas CD, and the results are the pleasantly simple and tasteful, “LIGHTS.”
